We all love the mountaintops.

The answered prayers. The breakthroughs. The victories. The moments when God opens doors, moves mountains, and reminds us of His goodness in ways we can clearly see.

But Scripture reveals something beautiful: God is not only the God of the mountain. He is also the God of the valley.

When the enemy assumed Israel’s God was only powerful on the mountains, the Lord responded, “Because the Arameans think the Lord is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands.” (1 Kings 20:28)

The valley is not evidence that God has left you.

The valley is often evidence that God is working on you.

Mountaintops reveal God’s blessings. Valleys reveal our character.

It is in the valley that perseverance is formed. It is in the valley that faith grows roots. It is in the valley that hope learns to stand when circumstances suggest otherwise.

“We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” (Rom 5:3–4)

Notice the progression. Hope is not born on the mountaintop. Hope is forged in the valley.

The valley is also where things grow.

No farmer plants crops on the mountain peaks. The fertile soil lies in the low places. The deepest roots are formed where the rain gathers. While we often pray to escape the valley, God is frequently using it to produce fruit that could never grow anywhere else.

David understood this when he wrote, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” (Psalm 23:4 )

The promise was never that we would avoid valleys.

The promise was His presence within them.

So celebrate when you stand on the mountain.

But also learn to worship in the valley.

Praise Him when the answer comes, and praise Him while you wait.

Praise Him when the breakthrough arrives, and praise Him while He is building perseverance, character, and hope.

Because one day you may look back and discover that the valley you tried so hard to escape was the very place where God grew you the most.

The mountain may show you God’s power.

But the valley often teaches you His heart.

And both are sacred places in the hands of a faithful God.
