“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs.” (Eph 4:29)

It is impossible to be life giving and life draining at the same time. Our words always build something. They either build people or they build walls. They either strengthen faith or strengthen fear. They either reflect the heart of God or echo the voice of the enemy.

The enemy’s strategy has always been isolation. God’s design has always been relationship. That is why one careless conversation, one piece of gossip, one sarcastic remark, or one critical spirit can slowly separate hearts that God intended to unite.

Before every conversation, perhaps we should ask ourselves one simple question:

“If I say this, will it leave this person stronger or weaker?”

Paul reminds us that our words should be helpful for building others up. Not merely truthful. Not simply honest. Helpful. Timely. Grace filled. Words that leave people with more hope than when they found them.

Scripture tells us that death and life are in the power of the tongue (Prov 18:21). Every day we are sowing seeds with what we say. We cannot speak death over our families, our future, our marriages, or ourselves all week, then wonder why we struggle to see life growing there.

When the enemy comes in like a flood, God raises up a standard against him. But we also have a responsibility: submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee (Jam 4:7). One way we resist him is by refusing to let our mouths become his microphone.

This week, I want to challenge you. Choose one person every day and intentionally speak life over them. Encourage someone. Bless someone. Pray over the very words that leave your mouth. Become known as someone whose presence lifts the room because your words carry heaven.

And if you cannot speak life in a moment… Sometimes the holiest thing you can do is remain silent until your heart is ready to speak like Jesus.

Lord, may my words heal more than they hurt, build more than they break, and always point people back to You.
